resonancia internacional: Roco Vargas.
Marie-Laure Ryan.

ABSTRACT:
In Spain,
during the 80’s, Cairo magazine collected in its pages the work of what
came to be called the “New Valencian School”, among which Daniel Torres was
included. Following the editorial line of the magazine, his works were
characterized by an adventurous escapism quite in parallel to the avant-garde
optimism of the time.
In 1983
Daniel Torres began a series that will have international resonance: Roco
Vargas. It presents a fictional world located in a futuristic present, but set
in the forties. It is what has been called “retrofuturism”, that is, a vision
of the future from the past. In this case, the background and aesthetics are
those of classic American film noir, while the plot is that of a space
adventure in the style of Flash Gordon.
The first
four albums of the series create a complete narrative arc while displaying a
very complex fictional universe, as can be seen thanks to the paratextual
materials that were included. Between the first and second albums, in
particular, Torres subjects the series to a profound aesthetic change, creating
the appearance that, with reasonable evolution, he will resume in the 2000’s.
In this
article we will deal with the fictional universe of Roco Vargas
according to the parameters established by Lubomir Doležel in his book Heterocosmica,
as well as from Mikhail Bakhtin's chronotopes or Marie-Laure Ryan's storyworld
proposal.
