ABSTRACT The detection of orthodontic problems and the selection of appropriate treatment methods
for these problems begin with a careful and detailed diagnosis. The first step in determining the current
state of both hard and soft tissues, developing a treatment plan with a problem-oriented approach, and
comparing the condition before and after the treatment is the objective measurement of the hard and soft
tissues. Diagnostic procedures, which started with the examination of the three-dimensional structure of
dentofacial tissues in two dimensions, are gradually giving place to the three-dimensional imaging methods
with the advent of technology. Especially, in cases of dentofacial asymmetry in which deviations exist
in all three coordinate planes, three-dimensional imaging methods offer much more accurate evaluation
opportunities compared to two-dimensional imaging methods.
