Anxiety, sleep disturbance, confusion, agitation and delirium, which can occure in intensive care patients very often due to distress and fear, makes an adequate strategy of sedation and analgesia essential. On the other hand, oversedation and analgesia lead to prolonged mechanical ventilation and ICU stay. Insufficient sedation causes increased complication rate because of stress response. This paper mentions analgesics and sedatives in ICU and gives recomendations of guidelines resulting current studies in this area.
