Egypt was living in political turmoil before the Arab Spring, and it was the most and quickly
affected country from Tunusia’s struggle and success. In the post-Mubarak era, the rapid processes enabled democratic presidential elections for the first time in the country compared to the
previous ones, and as a result, M. Mursi, who had the support of the Muslim Brotherhood, was
elected president. Contrary to the increasing expectations for further democratization of Egypt,
the elections could not resolve the dispute between the parties and the civil unrest had steadily
increased. In the end, about 1 year after the presidential elections, Egypt experienced a military
coup, and ousting the first democratically elected civilian president has been a subject of different
analyses by the regional and international community.
During the process started towards the end of 2010, also known as Arab Spring, Turkey supported
the people’s movements against their governments in the Middle East. The coup administration
in Egypt reacted to Turkey who continued to support M. Mursi, who ousted by military coup in
July 2013, by putting an end to diplomatic relations.
