CREATIVITY MANAGEMENT IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF CULTURAL IDENTITY: LIVING MUSEUMS

ABSTRACT

Museums have continued their existence as public, non-profit institutions as public memory, especially since the end of the 18th century, and with the rise of the nation-state understanding, they have become places that create, collect, exhibit and protect cultural identity in the process of states building canon on people. With these features, they have become the representatives and protectors of cultural heritage by taking the aspect of intangible cultural heritage of culture, especially tangible cultural heritage, over time. The increase in the number of museums with the changing and transforming understanding of museology over the years has led to the diversification of the management ownership of the museums and, in consequence, the increase in competition. This necessitated the creation of creative works to appeal to a wide range of visitors in order to preserve the existing social memory of societies, to maintain their existence and to ensure their sustainability in their geography. Therefore, living museums have emerged among the museum types that can creatively undertake the sustainability of cultural identity.

In this study, by using archival scanning, data and document analysis methods from qualitative research methods, the examples of living museums in the United States are examined and it demonstrated that, living museums play a significant role in the construction of cultural identity and how the museum organization provides creativity management in a competitive environment through living museums. According to the results, the dynamic exhibition and presentation techniques that are placed in a certain context or realized in the context of living museums allow creativity management, and in this regard, it can serve directly with experience in displaying identity through culture. It has been concluded that living museums, which have the feature of being in direct contact with the visitors, are used as a tool in the construction of cultural identity and in the ancientization process, as well as social policies.
