Hasan Hikmet, descending from Sokullu Mehmet Pasha, was born at Uskudar in 1894. He was graduated from primary and secondary schools in Uskudar. After finishing the Vefa High School, he enrolled in the Faculty of Law at Istanbul University. While he was a student in the Vefa High School, he came across the newly publishing journal, Sırat-ı Müstakim. Hereby, he met with Mehmed Akif and Eşref Edib. In the same period, he had been affiliated to the Committee of Union and Progress with insistence of the committee members, but after a while he bitterly regretted. With the start of the First World War, he was sent to the Eastern Front as a correspondence officer. After the Armistice of Mondros, he started to finish his education and got a work in Istanbul Municipality. He wrote a lot of articles with the title of “İçtimaiyâtta Garpçılık ve Bozgunculuk” in the journal of Sebilürreşad between 1923 and 1925. In this articles, he discussed a lot of topics, related with sociology, socio-psychology, theology, education and literature in detail. Sebilürreşad was shut down by the Takrîr-i Sükûn Law in 1925. After this, he withdrew himself from press and he focused on his family and his work. He just met with Eşref Edib during the single party era. After passing into the multi-party system, his connection with Eşref Edib increased but he did not write anything for Sebilürreşad. Hasan Hikmet, one of the founders of the Ilim Yayma Cemiyeti, passed away in 1976.
